National Guard does in-home coronavirus tests at Miami senior residential facilities

Apart from helping run coronavirus testing sites in South Florida, the Florida National Guard is now doing in-home testing at some senior residential facilities in Miami-Dade County.
On Friday, the National Guard was ordered by the state to conduct testing at the Residential Plaza of Blue Lagoon, 5617 NW Seventh St., and the Golden Gates Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 220 Sierra Dr., Maj. Caitlin Brown told the Miami Herald.
Although a number of drive-thru testing sites have been set up around Miami-Dade County, some seniors are home-bound or don’t have a car to get to those testing stations. In the last few days, the county and some cities have begun offering tests in seniors’ homes. This was the first time the Florida National Guard offered in-home tests in Miami-Dade.

“We have accomplished testing in two facilities in the Miami area,” Brown said. “The Florida National Guard brings a certain skill set that is needed during this time.”

Brown was not able to say why the National Guard was directed to perform tests at these two facilities, but did say the guard may conduct testing at other residential facilities in Miami-Dade if the state orders it.
The National Guard is currently helping facilitate testing at sites in Miami-Dade and Broward County, including Marlins Park, the Hard Rock Stadium and C.B. Smith Park.
